The Role of Custom Orthotics in Facilitating Greater Health and Fitness Through Walking

Taking a walk may be the most underrated way to maintain your health and fitness. The more obvious benefits include preserving a healthy weight, improving cardiovascular health, strengthening muscles, reducing stress, and increasing energy. But the benefits go much deeper than most people realize.

Additional Physical Health Benefits of Walking

A brisk 30 to 60 minute walk five days a week can deliver benefits that might surprise you:

  1. Decreases the impact of weight-promoting genes — researchers studying 32 obesity-promoting genes found that people who walked briskly for about an hour a day cut the influence of those genes in half.

  2. Curbs cravings for sugary snacks — just 15 minutes of brisk walking has been shown to reduce the urge for a variety of sugary snacks.

  3. Reduces the risk of developing multiple cancers — research shows walking is associated with meaningfully lower risk across several cancer types including breast, colon, endometrial, kidney, liver, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and myeloma.

  4. Eases arthritic joint pain — walking not only reduces joint pain related to arthritis but can reduce the chances of experiencing moderate joint pain by as much as 28% and severe joint pain by as much as 30%.

  5. Boosts immune function — a study of over 1,000 adults found that those walking at least 20 minutes daily, five days a week, had 43% fewer sick days, and when they did get sick, symptoms were milder and shorter in duration.

  6. Regulates blood sugar — even light intensity walking after a meal has been shown to help moderate blood sugar levels.

  7. Helps you live longer — walking is an activity regularly practiced by centenarians around the world, contributing significantly to their longevity. In the Blue Zones — the communities with the highest concentration of people living past 100 — daily walking is a cornerstone of everyday life.

Mental Health Benefits of Walking

That same brisk walk five days a week has a dramatic impact on your cognitive health too:

  1. Diminishes dementia risk — walking around 9,800 steps, roughly 90 minutes, can reduce dementia risk by as much as 51%.

  2. Slows cognitive decline — older adults walking at least 7,500 steps per day can delay cognitive decline by as many as 12 years, and even 30 minutes a day offers up to 9 years of protection.

  3. Improves memory and brain connectivity — just 30 minutes of walking shows significant increases in memory and other brain connectivity functions.

Why How You Walk Matters as Much as Whether You Walk

Walking is powerful — but only when your body is properly aligned. If your feet, ankles, knees, or hips are even slightly out of balance, every step you take reinforces that imbalance. Over time this creates compensatory patterns throughout the spine that lead to pain, reduced mobility, and less benefit from the walking you are already doing.

This is where custom orthotics make a profound difference.

How Custom Orthotics Support Your Walking and Your Health

Custom orthotics are individually designed supports that correct the unique alignment pattern of your feet. Unlike off-the-shelf insoles, they are made specifically for your foot structure, gait, and lifestyle.

At my San Rafael practice, orthotics are prescribed following a detailed posture evaluation and foot scan that identifies exactly where your imbalances are. By correcting the foundation — your feet — custom orthotics help:

Reduce strain on joints, muscles, and the spine Improve posture and walking efficiency Reduce pain in the feet, knees, hips, and lower back Allow you to walk longer and more comfortably Maximize every health benefit walking has to offer
