Tips For Mental Health

Dear reader I learned from reading Dr. Marty Rossman’s newsletter that May is Mental Health Month. A lot of us were slammed with mental health issues over the past three years, from the financial loss, isolation and fear of the Covid pandemic. Even pre-pandemic the American Psychological Association reported that 75% of adults older than 22 and 90%of young adults between 18 and 22 experienced at least one physical or emotional manifestation of stress in a given month.

In this blog, I share an unexpected resource and some guided meditations from Dr. Rossman to bring you back to a comfortable state of mind. Did you know that the state of your gut affects your brain and your mental state as well as your physical well-being? This is powered through microbiota–gut–brain pathways controlled by your immune system affecting inflammation in your brain and nervous system. When there is information in your central nervous system, all sorts of bad things happen:

  • Bad sleep

  • Stress that can become chronic

  • Perceived stress Even though there is no danger, those with a history of trauma often have a heightened sense of stress. This is called perceived stress.



Do you know how researchers do painstakingly detailed processes to check out the safety and efficacy of different interventions on different population groups? Well, one such research group found that a good gut bacteria called lacticaseibacillus paracasei nicknamed L pc-37 modified the microbiota. Lpc-37 was investigated for its ability to modulate stress, mood, and well-being in 120 than 190 adults with good results. The 120-person trial was completed in five weeks. The one with 190 was eight weeks. Lpc-37 is safe to use and also helps to inhibit the growth of bad bacteria in your gut. A rodent study showed improved memory in stressed animals.
